Valley Fair Shopping Center
Valley Fair is a 1.2 million square foot regional mall that was proposed for enlargement by approximately 300,000 square feet. Hexagon staff was hired by Trizec Hahn, the shopping center owners to complete a traffic study in satisfaction of City of San Jose requirements. Because of its proximity to a residential neighborhood and because of past traffic problems in the area, the shopping center expansion became a controversial project. Hexagon staff spent many hours observing traffic operations in the area and made various recommendations for improvements. Some of the problems that were addressed were an excessive number of driveways, poor interface between the driveways and the street, a lack of adequate sight distance, and traffic intrusion into the neighborhood. These problems were addressed with various design modifications including consolidating driveways, adding a median left-turn lane to the street, and adding a diverter to the neighborhood. The expansion and traffic mitigation program were approved by the San Jose City Council.
