| Hexagon was hired by the San Jose Redevelopment Agency to conduct a parking study of the area of the city known as Japantown. Japantown is a small neighborhood center with shops and restaurants, in addition to apartments and single-family homes. Because of the number of restaurants, parking in Japantown can be difficult at lunch time and also at night. The lack of parking was restricting the level of development that could occur. Hexagon was charged with finding inexpensive ways to increase the parking supply. The study recommendations included a number of parking supply and management changes. It was recommended to restripe some streets from parallel to diagonal parking, joint use of a church parking lot was recommended, and conversion of a private lot to public parking was recommended. The study determined that more expensive measures, such as buying property to build a parking lot, were not necessary provided that the existing parking was better-managed. | |
