The Alum Rock Parking Study
Hexagon was hired by the San Jose Redevelopment Agency to study parking issues in the Alum Rock redevelopment area. The redevelopment area comprises about 12 blocks along Alum Rock Avenue, a major arterial. Existing development consists of a mix of older retail and industrial buildings with pockets of new residential. The parking study came about as a recommendation of a master plan done for the area. One major new project to be recently built is the Mexican Heritage Center. This center comprises a museum, theater, banquet space, meeting rooms, and a large outdoor plaza. The parking study found that most of the area either has sufficient parking now or will have sufficient parking when the parcels redevelop. The exception is the Mexican Heritage Center, which does not have enough parking to serve some of its larger events. The Hexagon parking study recommended that the city pursue acquisition of a vacant adjacent parcel to develop for additional parking for the center.
